Old multifuel stove replaced by new Franco-Belge Montfort with new chimney lining after brickwork repairs by Fotheringhay Woodburners

Elderly stove to be replaced by traditional style Franco-Belge Montfort Elegance

The old stove has given many years of good service but is now in need of replacing. The chimney is not lined and the closure plate at the bottom is not really satisfactory or in good order.

Scaffolding is needed to safely access and rebuild this chimney

The top of the chimney is in very poor condition and the pot is leaning badly where its steel support bars have rotted. Scaffolding is the only way to access this as the chimney is tall and there will be a lot of building materials to go up there as well as needing to remove the old deteriorated brickwork and chimney pot.

Brickwork in poor condition with damage caused by water and cement mortar visible

Now we can see how bad it is, the bricks are disintegrating where water has managed to get in and the supports for the pot have rusted away. Some old repairs with a very strong cement mortar have made things worse. Some of the bricks will have to be replaced as they are softer than the cement mortar and will break when we try to remove it.

Lime based mortar and matching bricks have been used for chimney repairs

With the clients bricks and a lime based mortar we have rebuilt the top of the chimney and are ready for the new lining to be fitted.

The lining is now in and the new chimney pot has been flaunched up and a stainless steel birdguard fitted on top.
